Underwater photography used to inspect bridge abutments on the Hwy 6 Bridge, Kawarau Falls.
Geomatics performed a bridge inspection for New Zealand Transit Authority in February 2015. The inspection involved the trial of
a variety of inspection tools including sonar and under-water photography. Underwater photography proved invaluable in providing qualitative information on the condition of the submerged bridge abutments. In the column to right is a point cloud developed from a series of underwater photos (including the example to the left). Below this is a plan view illustration of the entire bridge area showing locations of GNSS/echosounder observations. Some areas proved inaccessible due to dangerous conditions for navigation, but the majority of the areas around the bridge abutments proved navigable by jet boat.
