Taumutu
Ocean Beach Survey
On this open ocean beach in Canterbury, New Zealand, access to the survey area was through the surf. Equipment had to be highly portable and waterproof (equipment is stored in the red bag forward). Qualified surf-lifesavers accompanied the survey. Note the prop guard on the engine (for working around people in the water) which also had a specially reinforced, non-locking mounting bracket.
Taumutu is at the outlet to Lake Ellesmere in Canterbury. The purpose of the survey was to gain information on the environmental conditions at the entrance to the lake. The survey was able to ascertain the beach contours (bathymetry), and also was also able to gather side scan sonar images that showed sand waves and surfiicial geology (bottom type).
